Be A Brain Explorer!
Come along to the Hadyn Ellis Building at Cardiff University to learn all about the brain with fun and engaging activities such as Wild Animal Brains, Learn to Pipette, Immersive Illusions and our Brain Dome Bouncy Castle!
This event is appropriate for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.
Tickets can be booked for a 2-hour session: 11am - 1pm or 1pm - 3pm.
Please book one ticket per child. A responsible adult must remain in attendance with each child for the duration of the event.

In celebration of Cardiff Science Festival, join us this half term at our free Be a Scientist! event.
Being a scientist can mean so many different things. We want to give you a flavour of what different scientists do and how science affects our everyday lives.
We’ve planned a fun day full of interactive activities and interesting experiments for you to experience what being a Scientist is like. We've got magnetic motors, electrical engineering, mind boggling puzzles, top-secret workshops you can book on the day and much more – even sciences you may have never heard of!
There's something herefor everyone, no matter if you're 10 or 100! We’re excited to introduce some brilliant minds from across the University and some friendly local businesses, including CSA Catapult, who are sure to spark your imagination!...Perhaps you could be an Engineer of the future?
Café facilities are available for snacks, lunch or even a slice of cake. There is limited paid parking around the area so why not park up at the museum and have a day out! Travelling by Cardiff Bus, you can find us on bus routes 21, 24, 27, 35.

The Bones and Organs Project This activity will teach children the importance of the human anatomy, they will have the opportunity to build a skeleton using plastic bones provided by the Wales Centre for Anatomical Education. Choosing the bones and building the skeleton will help the students to remember the different bones and makes it a great active learning strategy.

With extinction comes a great loss of information about a species biology, ecology, and evolutionary history. The activity involves the public (7 – 80 years of age) being able to make a permanent magnet motor, similar to what all cars and trains will need in the future. In addition, we will provide volunteers (academics, research staff) who will be able to show hands on magnetic demonstrations e.g. train using magnetic propulsion, magnetic liquids, electric generator.
Spark Your Imagination "Power up your problem-solving skills!
Have you ever wondered how computers can do so many complex things? How electric cars, robots, and cooling fans can turn can electricity into movement? All these things are made possible through electrical and electronic engineering.
Our event activities are designed to introduce two very important devices used in electrical and electronic engineering, to show you how they work.
Logic Gates:
A key part of how computers make decisions is through something called a logic gate. Logic gates are one of the building blocks used in modern computers - a single computer contains hundreds of millions of them! They work by only letting information through if certain conditions are met. We’ll demonstrate how they work and give a bit of insight into how a computer “thinks”.
Electric Motors:
electric motors are devices that change electricity into movement. They come in a range of shapes and sizes and have many different applications, from electric watches to cars. We’ll help you make your very own motor with our ‘DIY Motors’ and show you some of the science behind how they work."

FREE EVENT Wales Kidney Research Unit open laboratory
As part of the Cardiff Science Festival (https://www.cardiffsciencefestival.co.uk), WKRU is opening its research lab on 20th February 2023 and will be showing exciting science and experiments, explaining the ongoing kidney research with games.
Come and look through a microscope to discover what a cell looks like, look at colourful images of a kidney, learn about what actually is PCR or how we use biomarkers to help diagnose or predict disease progression.
You can even learn how to use a pipette!
Tours will last approximately 1h.
Aimed at ages 7+ but some activities will be available for younger siblings. Please note, all children will need to be supervised at all times by parents / guardians’.

Come and join our Be a Scientist! day at sparc|spark, Cardiff University for Cardiff Science Festival. We've planned a fun day full of hands-on activities and interesting experiments. Being a scientist can mean so many different things, and we want to give you a flavour of what different scientists do.
We have a variety of stalls and workshops running throughout the day, and you can come along to see what being a Scientist is like. We've got magnetic motors, electrical engineering, mind boggling puzzles and so much more. There's something here for everyone, no matter if you're 8 or 80! We’re excited to host some brilliant minds from across the University and beyond, who’ll be available for questions and chats all day. We’re also excited be to joined by CSA Catapult who will be offering activities to Spark your imagination!... Perhaps you could be an Engineer of the future?

This event is a basic introduction to robotics and shows robots operating in the real world as well as robot models performing tasks that have been built using a Lego Mindstorm kit. The intention is to provide an understanding of robotics in an entertaining and fun way using a Lego robot.
The event is primarily for schoolchildren, based on a lesson aimed at Key Stages 2 to 3, but parents are expected to join in; as well as being a fun session it's an opportunity for those attending to pick up a basic understanding of robotics and gain an insight into what a career in Robotics could offer.
So, whether you have some knowledge of the subject and looking to learn more or merely curious this event is designed to accommodate both!
What will you get out of this event?
• We will explain what robotics is all about in simple terms.
• We will show a short video illustrating what real robots can currently achieve as well as how some of these can be achieved using Lego kits that you can build in your home.
• There will be an opportunity for you to share your ideas on what Robotics could do in the future. The good, the bad and the ugly!
• We will look at another video explaining the component parts of a Lego robot.
• We will talk briefly about programming a robot before showing a video on programming a Lego MindStorms EV3 robot to perform a simple sequence of tasks.
• We will finish with a Q&A session
This event is presented by the South Wales Branch of the BCS the chartered institute for IT

Bones and Organs - The Bones and Organs Project This activity will teach children the importance of the human anatomy, they will have the opportunity to build a skeleton using plastic bones provided by the Wales Centre for Anatomical Education. Choosing the bones and building the skeleton will help the students to remember the different bones and makes it a great active learning strategy.

We will be hosting a range of workshops where you can smell, watch and get hands on our products. Ingredients, plastic free alternatives and knowing exactly what is in your products mean so much to us! So stop by and learn all about our fighting against animal testing cosmetics.
Not only will there be interactive experiences on our shop floor but there will also be the opportunity to make a product! This will be completely optional and the cost will be the price of the product being made! This way you get a fresh hand-made product, made by you! We can't wait to see you!

More than just a pretty space: How Symmetry Hides in Science
For most people, the word “symmetry” evokes memories of making paper snowflakes or learning about isosceles triangles in their high school. So quite often, when I tell peers that my research involves symmetry, the most common reaction is to ask “Why are you interested in a subject like this?” or “What relevance does this have to the modern world?”.
This talk aims to answer these questions by introducing the field of mathematics which studies symmetry- group theory, and discussing why it has pertained such a large field of mathematics, and the broad applications throughout science.
Besides being useful and interesting, symmetry has remained important globally in creating architecture, design and art. This led the mathematician Ian Stewart to call Group Theory, “the study of beauty."
