More than just a pretty space: How Symmetry Hides in Science

Book your tickets

For most people, the word “symmetry” evokes memories of making paper snowflakes or learning about isosceles triangles in their high school. So quite often, when I tell peers that my research involves symmetry, the most common reaction is to ask “Why are you interested in a subject like this?” or “What relevance does this have to the modern world?”.

This talk aims to answer these questions by introducing the field of mathematics which studies symmetry- group theory, and discussing why it has pertained such a large field of mathematics, and the broad applications throughout science.

Besides being useful and interesting, symmetry has remained important globally in creating architecture, design and art. This led the mathematician Ian Stewart to call Group Theory, “the study of beauty."

Can you create an accurate timepiece?

Hear from real scientists who work with atomic clocks at the UK's leading measurement institute, then it's hands-on time! You'll need 50 cm of string, something a bit heavy (like two Lego bricks), and something to hang from it to hand, plus a timer (on your phone?)

Seagrass - The oceans wonder plant that needs saving

Book Tickets Here

Join us for an introduction to the underwater plant, Seagrass. No, this isn’t a seaweed, but a group of flowering plants that live under the sea in shallow sheltered areas along our coastline. With bright green leaves and waterproof pollen, they form large dense green meadows under the sea and create homes for marine life. However, seagrasses are under threat and it is estimated that in the UK we have lost up to 92% of our meadows. Join our Scientist’s from Welsh based ‘Project Seagrass’ to learn about the ocean gardening they undertake, trowel and seeds in hand, and how you too might be able to save this ocean wonder.

Finite Element Analysis: Making sure structures are strong enough

Finite Element Analysis: Making sure structures are strong enough

Why did this crack appear in this aircraft component? Using a computer analysis technique called finite element analysis the component is virtually tested to see if clues can be found as to why it failed. Finite element analysis can be used for this type of forensic investigation or as part of the design process to investigate the behaviour of structures under various loading conditions.
