Authentic yet light-hearted chat about medicines and the people behind them

The Aural Apothecaries are three pharmacists who share banter and conversation with guests from across the world of healthcare. We invite them to offer up a life changing book, a career anthem and a Desert Island Drug – a medicine that has changed their life. Previous guests have included Times Columnist Dr Mark Porter, the ‘Menopause Doctor’ Dr Louise Newson and British Lion John Devereux.

In this, our first ever live show, we want to understand the patient’s point of view. We invite Jamie Brewster, who recently completed treatment for leukaemia, to join us to talk about the various treatments and medicines he has received. He will talk about how his experience as a patient and an architect has led him to question the nature of the inpatient environment and how he has developed solutions that could improve healing and aid recovery.

We promise this will be a fascinating story – with a few laughs thrown in for good measure. Who knows – you might even want to tell your own story?

Please join us on Saturday 19th February at the Milk and Sugar café for a 6pm start.

Sound and Bridges

Sound and Bridges

Book tickets here

Can bridges make sounds? When we walk across them they vibrate at particular natural frequencies. Just like when we pluck a guitar string or blow into a clarinet.

A group of engineers at Cardiff University decided to translate the vibrations of bridges into musical sounds. We walked, ran and jumped on a bridge at the university and measured the vibrations using a mobile phone app. Then we made our own music based on the bridge’s natural frequencies.

Perhaps we can detect damage in a bridge or an aircraft wing by listening to the changes in the music it makes.

Watch our ‘Sounds and Bridges’ presentation and listen to our music. Then think about ways that you can make music. Can you make our own musical instrument using something that vibrates. Is there a unique sound of the bridges of Wales?

How life on Earth began

How life on Earth began

This is an online event

The question of life's origin is one of the most perplexing in science. It is about why we are here as a species, our relationship to the universe, and whether there is life on other planets.

Yet despite the question's significance, there was little research into the origin of life before the 1950s. Then a young scientist named Stanley Miller performed a now-legendary experiment that seemed to show how the building blocks of life could have formed spontaneously on the newly-formed Earth. This kick-started research into the mystery.

Almost 70 years later, we still do not have a complete explanation for how life began. But in the last two decades, a series of startling experiments have pointed the way towards a possible explanation.

Michael Marshall, author of The Genesis Quest, tells the story of the scientists who have wrestled with the question of life's origin.

You can purchase a signed copy of Michael’s book here: https://www.griffinbooksonline.co.uk/products/9781474611411?_pos=1&_sid=f4ec09495&_ss=r
